Bermudian brothers win national championship in Canada
Two sets of brothers from Bermuda played key roles in helping St Andrew’s College win the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools Division 1 Senior Boys National Championship last weekend.
Sebastian and Michael Madeiros and Reza and Heris Ziai all played key roles, with co-captain Sebastian Madeiros named MVP in the final.
“This award reflects the collective effort of everyone on the team,” Madeiros said after picking up his trophy.
St. Andrew’s faced a travelling team from Saltus Grammar twice during the tournament, in which they remained unbeaten.
During the group stage, the St. Andrew’s Saints defeated Saltus Grammar School 3-0, Lower Canada College (Quebec) 1-0, and Upper Canada College (Ontario) 4-1. They continued their winning streak in the knockout rounds, starting with a 2-0 quarter-final victory over Selwyn House (Montreal), followed by a 3-1 win over Saltus in the semi-finals.
Coach Adrian Bradbury praised the contributions of the Bermuda-based players.
“Bermuda continues to be one of the foundations of our soccer programme here at St. Andrew's College,” Bradbury said.
“Our two senior starters, Seb and Reza, really asserted themselves during this championship weekend, while our two sophomores in Michael and Heris contributed in a major way and are key to the future of Saints Soccer.”
The Madeiros brothers and the Ziai sibling honed their skills in Bermuda at Warwick Football Academy and Robin Hood Football Club under the guidance of Coach Richard Todd and they have previously won at Kappa Classic.
