Nahki Wells rescues point for Bristol City with quickfire brace
Nahki Wells continued his fine recent form by scoring twice for Bristol City last night.
Wells, who has started both games for Bristol City since returning to England after notching a hat-trick for Bermuda against Dominica in the Concacaf Nations League, scored twice in the second half as his side came from two goals down to draw with Stoke City.
After Lewis Koumas and Andrew Moran had given Stoke a 2-0 lead at half-time, Wells scored twice in the space of three minutes early in the second half to level the game but was denied the chance to complete his second hat-trick in a couple of weeks when he was substituted in the 79th minute.
After beating Middlesbrough at the weekend, Bristol City’s latest point takes them up to ninth position in the Sky Bet Championship and Wells was pleased to continue his fine recent form.
“I’m delighted to get a couple of goals especially after the start we had,” Wells said.
“We put in a really good performance today but to be 2-0 down after 20 minutes or so was frustrating, as I still felt like we had a good start to the game.
“We went behind and we galvanised and the players still kept to the script, had plenty of chances and got to the final third so well.
“Being 2-0 down at half-time was not a true reflection of the game. Once I scored the first, I thought we could win, but it is a great point.”
Bristol City are playing without the input of coach Liam Manning, who is taking time away from the club after the death of his baby son, and Wells laid out what a tough time the club are having off the pitch.
“It’s been a really tough week,” Wells said. “The fortunate thing is that we do have those games to sidetrack us from the realities of what we and the club have had to deal with over the last week and a bit.
“But to get three points at Middlesbrough on Saturday and a point away here after being 2-0 down shows our resilience and what we epitomise as a team. It keeps our unbeaten run going and we had fantastic support here and fair play to them for travelling on a Tuesday night and playing their part.”
