North Village hunt for third straight win
After walking away with three points against St George’s Colts at Wellington Oval last week, North Village return to the same venue at 3pm this afternoon, searching for their third straight victory against winless Hamilton Parish.
Village beat St George’s 3-1 to avenge last season’s FA Cup Final defeat by the East Enders.
It was their second triumph of the season, with former St George’s striker Jonté Smith playing an instrumental role.
Smith, the hero for St George’s in their FA Cup triumph at the Flora Duffy Stadium in April, was involved in two of the goals.
The 30-year-old applied the pressure for Jarazinho Bassett to concede a first-half own goal and then slotted home a penalty after being brought down by Gregory Wade. The other goal was a magnificent strike by Jai Bean.
Village’s victory put behind their jittery start to the season when they lost 3-1 to Young Men’s Social Club.
With the St George’s fans likely to be more friendly towards him this time around, Smith is expected to play another huge role for Village.
His combination with Bean has been a marvel in the two wins recorded by last season runners-up. Bean’s goal last Saturday was his third in as many matches.
The Parish defence that has leaked nine goals in three matches will have to be at its best to handle the Village firepower.
Tre Ming, Seke Spence, Amir Dill and London Steede will be expected to create scoring opportunities for Smith and Bean.
Detre Bell made some brilliant saves and was unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet on his return from suspension. The Bermuda substitute goalkeeper should benefit from a solid defence, likely to be Liam Evans, Rai Sampson, Jayce Basden and Khimo Harrison.
Parish had conceded eight goals in two matches but their defence fared better against PHC in their last outing. Sergio Goater’s side only lost 1-0 against a side that had won 11-2 against Wolves in their previous encounter.
After avoiding a huge loss against PHC, Justin Bell, Leroy Lewis Jr and Macquille Walker are expected to lead Parish’s quest for goals.
PHC, the only team in the league to win all three matches, are away to Devonshire Cougars. Quincy Hunt’s side return to Devonshire Rec, a venue where they lost a Dudley Eve match to Parish last month.
The champions will be searching for a win that will keep the chasing pack at arm’s length. Cougars pulled off what can be considered a surprise last Saturday when they hammered Paget 4-1 to pick up their first win of the season.
Before the PHC clash with Cougars, the same venue will host Devonshire Colts’ fight to get back to winning ways against Wolves, a team bottom of the standings with no wins so far.
Last Sunday, Colts lost to Dandy Town, which was their first league defeat of the season. Social Club, with two wins from their opening three matches, have a chance to pick up a third victory against Town, who are also on a similar mission.
