Nahki Wells raring to go in crucial Nations League fixtures
Nahki Wells hopes to continue his prolific form in Bermuda’s crucial upcoming Concacaf Nations League fixtures against Antigua & Barbuda on Saturday and Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
The Bristol City striker has been virtually unstoppable in recent weeks, notching seven goals playing for club and country in as many matches, including a hat-trick in Bermuda’s 6-1 defeat of Dominica at Flora Duffy Stadium last month.
“I am in fine form at the moment and grateful I was able to get back and play, which contributed to me going on a run and getting back into my side and becoming the main focal point of our team again, which hasn't been the case in a while,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.
“Obviously scoring a hat-trick and helping us get the three points is something I am grateful and thankful for; having come back and using that as a catalyst to help get me back playing my best football again.
“I am in a great place and looking to perform and continue the rich form that I am in. Be a leader, step up and be the person that the team can rely on and do what I do best; and that's perform and scoring goals and helping the team win so I am focused, excited and we'll see how it goes.”
The Gombey Warriors are heading into their final two League B group D matches in second, three points adrift of leaders Dominican Republic.
The eventual group winner will qualify for next year’s Concacaf Gold Cup and promotion to League A, while the two best League B group runners-up will go into a play-off to qualify for the next Gold Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada and the United States.
“I’m looking forward to the games and they are very important ones for us trying to top the group for the Nations League,” Wells added.
“Obviously in order to do that, we need two good results so that's where we will be looking to put our emphasis starting with Antigua.
“They are very important and the carrot at the end is obviously Gold Cup 2025 and that's where want to get along with getting to group A.
“That's the reward which obviously takes us back to being able play a lot of the top nations like Jamaica, Mexico and USA which would be great exposure and experience for us players and also the country, so that's the objective.
“It's not going to be easy. It’s going to be tough but we have beaten Antigua and Dominican Republic in the past.
“We have won our last three fixtures so we are looking to continue that and try and win the next two, which we are more than capable of doing.
“We have a great squad that we are expecting to be more than capable of being able to compete with both sides and get the points.
“We are in a great place and looking to get off to a great start on Saturday when we take on Antigua. Hopefully the nation can get behind us and tune in and be that supporting factor we always need.
“Even though it's away the support is always warranted, appreciated and helpful. It makes the squad feel important and helps us perform when it's time.”
