Rhode Island FC celebrates their Eastern Conference Title

Coach Khano Smith is celebrating as his Rhode Island FC side won the first trophy in their history after lifting the USL Championship Eastern Conference title.

Smith’s side, who finished fifth in the regular season, beat Charleston Battery 2-1 at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium with their goals coming from Karifa Yao and Noah Fuson.

Rhode Island are the first expansion team in eight years to advance to the USL Championship Final in their inaugural season and the first ever in the Eastern Conference.

They have done things the hard way in the postseason, winning games on the road against Indy Eleven and Louisville City before prevailing against Charleston.

Khano Smith is now a Conference-winning coach

They will now play for the league championship on Saturday at 1pm, when they travel to take on Colorado Springs Switchbacks at Weidner Field. The match will be televised live on CBS Sports.

It could be a good weekend for Bermudians in the US with forward Zeiko Lewis playing for Union Omaha in the USL League 1 Championship Game at 3pm.

Whatever happens in that match there will be no time for celebrations or commiserations for Lewis, who will be flying straight to the Dominican Republic to join up with the Bermuda squad for their final match in the Concacaf Nations League against Dominican Republic on Tuesday.
