Dandy Town will attempt to return to the top of the Premier Division when they take on Devonshire Cougars tonight (8pm).

Town sit third in the league table with 20 points, two points behind leaders North Village and PHC, with this match cancelling out their game in hand over Village; PHC have played a game more.

However, Kyle Lightbourne’s side will need to bounce back to form if they are going to assume top spot after losing their last two games, one in the league and in the FA Cup first round last weekend.

Town lost 2-0 to championship rivals Village in the Premier Division a couple of weeks ago to lose their title lead but Lightbourne was keen to play down the defeat in his post-match comments to The Royal Gazette.

“I don’t think it’s much of a setback,” he said. “We would have loved to go undefeated in the second half of the season, but that’s the way it goes.

“Momentum is very important in football and I said to my guys that there’s always a banana peel around the corner. You know in football these things happen and those days come; it’s how we react now.

“We just have to use our upcoming matches and get something out of them. We have to use that game in hand over Village and make sure that it counts.”

That league defeat, though, has been followed by an early exit from the FA Cup after they were beaten 2-1 by Paget at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

Devonshire Cougars come into the match off the back of a 3-1 victory over Wolves in the FA Cup in an emotional encounter with both teams using the match as an opportunity to honour the memory of former player Jawonday Smith, who died suddenly last week.

In their last Premier Division match, Cougars beat Devonshire Colts 2-1 and sit seventh in the league on 14 points.
