Donovan Thompson and Teiko Lowe scored hat-tricks as X-Roads beat Somerset Eagles 8-0 at White Hill Field on Sunday to stretch their lead at the top of the First Division.

Lowe netted in the 20th, 38th and 68th minutes and Thompson in the 30th, 77th and 87th minutes, with Aaron Spencer (26th) and captain Paul Simons (75th) also on the scoresheet.

The result leaves X-Roads on 25 points, four clear of second-place Boulevard, who occupy the remaining promotion spot and have two games in hand.

Experienced X-Roads striker Thompson was delighted to avenge the defeat to Eagles in the Shield quarter-final last December.

“We owed them something for knocking us out of the Shield,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“We don’t belong in the First Division. We are a Premier Club and are just trying to make a statement and demand more from ourselves being in this league.”

Thompson has netted seven goals so far this season and is happy to be back among the goals.

“A big thank you to coach [Farid El Karfa] and club captain Paul Simons who made it a firm statement that I must take the penalty that was the first goal leading up to the hat- trick,” he said.

“The penalty goal brought me alive. Personally I am having a difficult time at the moment coming back from injury, so I wasn’t having the best game until I got the first goal.”

Thompson’s season came to halt after he injured his ankle in his team’s 2-1 league win over Eagles last November, which kept him on the sideline for more than a month.

“Despite being injured and missing over a month of football, I still have ambitions to be the league’s leading goalscorer,” he added. “I have seven goals in the league so far and I’m pushing for more.”

Also victorious on Sunday was Robin Hood who beat Southampton Rangers 4-2 at Southampton Oval.

The visitors prevailed with goals from Cairo Tucker, Jahzion Taylor, Alexander Lipinski and player-coach Cecoy Robinson. Rangers replied through Dominique Hill and N’Cori Smith.

Robinson was happy to have found the net but was more pleased by the effort of his young squad.

“It’s always good to get on the sheet but it was about commitment from the young players,” he said. “They applied themselves from the first whistle and that’s what we have been working on and talking about.

“It’s a young team so I was definitely proud to see the growth of the boys. We knew we needed a result and this shows we are on the right track.”

Due to a shortage of match officials, the remaining match between St David’s and Somerset Trojans at Lord’s was postponed and has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 23 at 1.30pm.
