Nelson Carpenter and Delray Rawlins scored in extra time to ensure Premier Division Paget Lions are into the last four of the FA Cup after victory over St David’s at Southampton Oval on Saturday.

Carpenter, who scored in the 96th minute, had taken plenty of shots from distance before breaking the deadlock but had confidence that he would eventually find the net.

“I told my keeper [Jade Morrissey] that the third one would go in,” Carpenter said. “I made sure I placed it well.”

Paget controlled possession for large periods of the first half but they lacked tempo in their passing, which allowed their First Division opponents to get back into shape.

When they did play with conviction, Paget easily opened up the away side’s defence, with visiting goalkeeper Dequan Crockwell forced to make the first of many acrobatic save to keep out Diaje Hart’s placed effort.

Thereafter, Paget continued to dominate the midfield but failure to make the correct decision in the final third and forwards being too intricate and failing to shoot allowed St David’s to clear.

Paget fashioned their best move midway through the first half. Daniel Cook and Dion Stovell made a neat interchange before Stovell slipped Hart into space in the right channel. The Paget captain drove a cross through the six-yard box but Carpenter leaned back too much and lashed his strike just over the bar.

Into the second half and substitute Delray Rawlins was found unmarked by Shakir Smith on two separate occasions, but the striker failed to direct both headers on target.

Just before the end of normal time, Carpenter hit the crossbar with a rasping effort from the edge of the area and Paget coach Antwan Russell was increasingly animated as regulation time came to an end.

Paget finally broke through early in extra time and the excellent St David’s goalkeeper Crockwell could do nothing about it. Hart recycled a corner for Smith, who played the ball perfectly into stride for Carpenter to majestically whip his strike into the far corner.

Crockwell made a fingertip save to keep out a low effort by Rawlins moments after the first goal but the substitute eventually found the net. Kyjah Simons clipped a ball into the penalty area and Rawlins outmuscled Daniel Baker to finish into the far post.

Crockwell made his third excellent save of the day straight after conceding for the second time. Cook swung a low ball into the penalty area and Rawlins tried to back-heel it into the net, but Crockwell made a reflex save.

Paget could have made it three with virtually the last kick of the game. Hart squared for Omari Tucker, but he was judged to be just offside.
