Blaiz Hall’s last-gasp winner seals points for St George’s
Wolves 1 St George's Colts 2
Blaiz Hall scored a minute before the end for St George’s to keep alive their ambitions of a top-four finish in the Premier Division when they subdued a resolute Wolves at Devonshire Rec last night.
Hall pounced on a rebound after Wolves goalkeeper Gatwoine Minors had spilt Jahron Dickinson’s shot.
Senoj Mitchell opened the scoring in the fourteenth minute for St George’s before Wolves equalised two minutes later through Jarred Douglas.
While their sixth win of the season leaves them still fifth in the league standings, Drewonde Bascome’s side moved on to 23 points, just a point behind Devonshire Colts and PHC.
Wolves, who suffered a tenth league defeat, remain bottom of the division with eight points and are running out of games in their attempt to avoid relegation.
Both sides had chances to open the scoring with Dickinson coming close for St George’s.
Lamelle Paynter had a glorious opportunity for Wolves 13 minutes into the encounter, but he could not make it count.
A minute later, a long ball found Mitchell, who made no mistake with a strike on the far post. Wolves were level shortly after when Douglas found himself unmarked in the box and had all the time in the world to tuck the ball beyond goalkeeprr Jahquil Hill’s reach.
Wolves started growing in confidence after scoring, with Kydan Browne’s powerful shot going wide and in the 31st minute, Torque Outerbridge had his brilliant free kick from the edge of the box tipped over by Hill.
As Wolves kept searching for a second goal, Outerbridge’s effort agonisingly went wide.
Minors used his feet to the block out Mitchell’s powerful shot a minute before half-time to ensure Wolves went into the break still level.
The second half featured Wolves attempting to sit back and trying to catch St George’s on the break. It was a strategy that worked for them for the better part, as they frustrated their opponents.
Hall had his shot from a tight angle blocked out for a corner by Minors in the 66th minute.
With nine minutes left, St George’s substitute Tah-Ki Tucker had his header from a corner cleared off the line by Khari Sharrieff-Hayward.
Dickinson skied his effort in the 85th minute from a lovely delivery by Jarryd Richardson on the left.
Just when Wolves thought they had done well to earn a point, Dickinson took a shot at goal from distance. An outstretched Minors, in a desperate attempt to stop the ball from going over the line, punched it back into the path of Hall who had an easy task of scoring the winner for St George’s.
