Kyle Lightbourne hoping Dandy Town can stay in title contention
With just four games to go in the Premier Division, the title race appears to be going to the wire.
North Village sit proudly top of the table on 28 points, two clear of Dandy Town, with PHC and Devonshire colts two points further back on 24 with every team having just four games left to play.
Dandy Town take on Paget at Southampton Oval at 3pm today and head coach Kyle Lightbourne is hopeful that his side will be in with a shout of the championship on the final day of the season.
“We’re still in with a chance in the league but we’ve blown a couple of opportunities that we had and those things can happen,” Lightbourne said.
“We’re new into the job and probably a bit ahead of schedule. It’s disappointing that we are not leading the league but that happens. After the last two seasons of struggles we’ve stabilised and we’re going to try to finish the season off good. We’ve won one trophy and we’ll see if we can take it to the next level.
“We just want to stay in the race as long as possible. As long as we are two points behind and it doesn’t become bigger we’ll still be there fighting on the last day. North Village play PHC on the last day and anything can happen there, so we’ll just try to stay in contention.”
Lightbourne has formed a coaching partnership with Jarreau Hayward, who won the FA Cup with St George’s last season, and he feels the two have combined well, with a Friendship Trophy victory this season the proof.
“We’re a new team but Dandy Town has a good pedigree in terms of winning trophies and bringing young players through and we are trying to keep that legacy going,” Lightbourne said.
“Jarreau is a young coach and there are new things that come out in football, every week there is something new and he has the energy and drive. We bounce ideas off one another and the system we play is the system he really wants to work on.
“We’re working together in that department and I’m happy with the way things are going between him and myself. I respect what he’s learnt in football and I think he respects what I know and have learnt. That’s what it’s about and I give him enough opportunity to show his ability to coach.”
North Village play at the same time as Dandy Town today, as they meet bottom side Wolves at Bernard Park at 3pm.
PHC face a tricky away trip to St George’s at 3pm on Sunday, the same time as Devonshire Colts take on Young Men’s Social Club at Police Field. The footballing weekend is rounded off when Devonshire Cougars host Hamilton Parish at 6.30pm on Sunday.
