Young Men’s Social Club will attempt to secure their Premier Division survival when they travel to Devonshire Rec to take on Devonshire Cougars on Friday night (9pm).

Mike Smith’s team are hovering just above the drop zone, three points ahead of Wolves and five ahead of last-placed Hamilton Parish, having played a match fewer.

A win for the Bluebirds would complete the league double over Cougars and move them to 17 points, the maximum Wolves can take from their remaining two fixtures and two more than Parish, whom they will face in their season finale.

“I feel like all three of our final matches are important and we will take them one game at a time,” an optimistic Smith told The Royal Gazette.

The clash will be the third meeting between the rivals his season. Bluebirds edged Cougars 1-0 in the first league encounter at Police Field last December, but the latter avenged that defeat courtesy of a 3-1 triumph in the FA Cup quarter-final at Devonshire Rec last month.

“I’m pretty sure we both have a feel for each other,” Smith said. “I don’t think there will be any surprises; we just have to show up.

The league outing will be Bluebirds’ first since losing 3-1 away to PHC Zebras on March 7.

The goals have dried up for Smith’s team lately and he hopes his charges can put an end to that against Cougars.

“I like our efforts and energy in the last couple of games, but we have to put the ball in the back of the net,” Smith said. “I feel like if we do that and put a little pressure on Cougars that we can come out with a favourable result.

“I have a lot of respect for Cougars. They are a very good team preparing for the FA Cup final, so we know they will want to be in good nick and keep some form going. I think it’s going to be an interesting match.”

Cougars, who will face league leaders North Village in the FA Cup final next month, are sixth in the standings and have already retained their top-flight status for next season.

Village hold a four-point advantage over PHC at the summit and can clinch a tenth league title with a game to spare with victory over Devonshire Colts at Police Field on Sunday.
