Wolves all but relegated after Diaje Hart scores four for Paget
Wolves 2 Paget 4
Wolves will need a minor miracle if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier Division after losing to Paget on Saturday night.
Paget captain Diaje Hart scored four goals to leave Wolves three points behind Young Men’s Social Club and with a far inferior goal difference with just one game left of the season.
The Lions, however, are still in the hunt for a top-four finish with two games left to play and Hart was pleased with how his side coped against a team scrapping for league survival.
“We stood firm and took our chances,” Hart said. “Credit to Wolves, they came to play and they are fighting for their lives.
“I wanted to put last week’s penalty miss behind me. I was provided four clear moments, and I took my chances to score all of them.”
Wolves came out on the front foot and Paget, who were without suspended coach Antwan Russell, could not get into a rhythm early, misplacing passes in dangerous areas and allowing Wolves to create opportunities.
Their good work paid off inside ten minutes, when captain Jahmori Martin clipped a good ball forward for Samario Valasse-Paul to fire low past Paget goalkeeper Jade Morrissey.
Wolves should have doubled their lead through two more clear-cut chances in the first half. First, Krishun Douglas spread the play well for Martin, who swung in a cross for Valasse-Paul. The forward had goalkeeper Morrissey beaten with his effort, but it just cannoned off the outside of the far post.
Five minutes later, Douglas picked out Torque Outerbridge and he found another accurate cross for Valasse-Paul to strike at goal. This time Morrissey made himself big to save with his left foot.
About ten minutes before half-time, Paget equalised against the flow of play. Omari Tucker held up a lofted ball by Tristen Davis and slipped Diaje Hart into space on the right channel. Hart drove his strike into the far post from a tight angle, leaving Wolves keeper Chiquon Smith with no chance.
Paget pulled ahead early in the second half. Tristen Davis turned provider after making a promising run through the heart of midfield. He slipped Hart in to beat the Wolves offside trap and he finished past the dive of Smith to give Lions the lead.
Hart completed his hat-trick by converting a neat through ball by Tucker, who recorded his second assist before coming off for Kushae Hypolite.
Wolves pulled one back less than five minutes later from a combination of poor Paget defending and lack of judgment from Morrissey. Substitute Mackih McGowan shrugged off the attentions of Davis and then struck a decent effort towards goal, but Morrissey failed to adjust his feet to the soft shot, allowing the ball to squirm under his legs.
Wolves should have been on level terms with 20 minutes remaining, but Morrissey made a fingertip save to deny McGowan his second goal within less than ten minutes of coming on.
Paget would reward their goalkeeper for his heroics ten minutes from time after Hypolite skipped past a few defenders before Douglas took him down inside the area. Hart, with just his fifth shot on target of the night, scored his fourth goal from the resulting penalty, smashing into the top corner.
Morrissey concluded an excellent display of goalkeeping by keeping out a penalty from Khari Sharieff, guessing the right way after Devon Botelho was illegally challenged by Rakeem Deshields three minutes from time.
Paget never stopped attacking despite already holding a two-goal buffer and Cook just overhit a cross towards Hypolite.
