Bermuda look to bounce back against Haiti
After enduring an unpleasant start in their opening group A match at the Concacaf Women’s Under-17 World Cup Qualifiers final round in Mexico, Bermuda coach Gary Adams has declared that the team are geared up for the next encounter.
Adams’s side suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the hosts in Toluca on Monday, which left them third in the four-team group. They face Haiti on Wednesday (3pm) needing a win to keep alive hopes of qualifying for the Fifa World Cup, to be played in Morocco from October 17 to November.
Winners of the three groups, together with the best runner-up, will qualify for the World Cup, which means victory against Haiti is a must for Bermuda.
“Everyone is good and ready to go against Haiti,” Adams said.
Reflecting on the defeat by Mexico, the coach commended the players for putting in a great effort against one of the top teams in difficult conditions.
“We are trying. Mexico are a good team,’’ he said. “The girls worked hard at 9,000 feet above sea level.”
What should give Bermuda hope of picking up a positive result is that Haiti, the fourth-best side in the region for this age group, lost 8-0 to Costa Rica, a side that also came through the qualifiers.
Adams will look to the experienced goalkeeper Taya Rodrigues to shut out the Haitians. If Adams does not change the team that started against Mexico, captain Jayla Peets-Butterfield is expected to form a strong rearguard with Saony Trott, Ayshalay Simons and Zelaye Showers.
Janiya Sealey should provide a strong shield for the backline as a defensive link and the experienced Keyandae Lightbourne should be a stabilising figure in midfield.
Milan Gibbons-Thomas, Daley Outerbridge, Evans Welch, and Avani Patton are some of the options available for Adams as Bermuda look to get their first points on the board and bring their goal difference out of the negative.
