Gary Adams calls for discipline against Costa Rica
Bermuda coach Gary Adams has called for his team to be organised offensively when they face Costa Rica in their last match at the Concacaf Women’s Under-17 World Cup Qualifiers in Mexico on Saturday.
While the Lady Gombey Warriors are out of contention for World Cup qualification after defeats by Mexico and Haiti, victory over Costa Rica can see them finish in a better position when the qualifiers conclude.
“Against Costa Rica, we’re going to be defensively disciplined and keep our shape,” Adams said.
“Exactly how we did against Mexico. We’ve watched Costa Rica, they’re tactically a good team, unlike Mexico who went down the wings, trying to switch play and attack from the sides.
“Costa Rica has the ability to play through teams. As we saw against Mexico, they really competed for the first 30 minutes, so we have to be tight at the back to take away their ability to tactically play through us.
“We still have enough quality to go forward against Costa Rica. The message to the girls has been that although results haven’t gone our way, we had a chance to get points against Haiti.
“We need a professional showing against Costa Rica if we’re realistically thinking of getting anything out of this game. We’re going to give our best to end the tournament on a high note.
“But we also need to be respectful of the opponents, ourselves and keep our shape to be in the game for as long as we can.”
Daley Outerbridge, the victim of a horrendous tackle from Haiti goalkeeper Kalea Tranchant, is doubtful for the match.
“Unfortunately, Daley Outerbridge is yet to fully recover from the tackle against Haiti,’’ the coach added. “The altitude and heat have affected a few of the players, but everyone else is fine.”
