Bluebirds captain doubtful for key clash with Hot Peppers
Young Men’s Social Club captain Ryan Parris remains doubtful for the Bluebirds’ vital Premier Division game against relegated Hamilton Parish at Police Field on Sunday.
Parris picked up a calf injury in his team’s 4-1 loss at Devonshire Cougars on March 28 and missed their fixture with Paget Lions on Tuesday night, which also ended in a 4-1 defeat.
It’s uncertain whether the influential player will be available for Bluebirds’ season finale with Hot Peppers, from which they need to take only a point to guarantee their top-flight status for next season.
They can still lose and stay up as long as Wolves, who play at the same time, do not pull off an unlikely big win over Devonshire Cougars. Social Club have a goal difference of minus 23, while Wolves is minus 30.
Trey Tucker, the Social Club defender, hopes to have his captain back in the fold for their key match.
“We are not sure of the extent of the injury Ryan has. But hopefully he will be back to give us that extra push that we need because he is a great leader. He definitely helps us get over the line when we need him,” Tucker told The Royal Gazette.
Bluebirds are facing the same scenario and opponent as they did the previous campaign having also needed only to take a point off Parish in their season finale.
On that occasion, they lost 3-2 to Parish after squandering a two-goal advantage but avoided taking the plunge after Somerset Trojans lost by the same scoreline to North Village.
Tucker said he and his team-mates are up for the clash with Parish, who were relegated after losing to landlords St George’s Colts 5-2 in their previous outing.
“We definitely know the task at hand,” he said. “We had a goal [Premier Division survival] going into the season and have one more game to get over the line.
“We are going to do everything in our power to make sure that goal comes to fruition. We are going to work as hard as in any other game and know what we have to do.
“We know the position Paris) are in, but what we do is focus on ourselves in terms of our responsibilities what we have to do as a team going forward.
“No matter what position they are in, that is irrelevant in terms of how we approach the game. We know what we have to do to get over the line.”
Bluebirds could have avoided the drop with a point in their rescheduled fixture with Paget Lions on Tuesday night, forcing the relegation fight to be settled on the final day of the league season.
While Social Club only require a point, Wolves must beat FA Cup finalists Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Rec by at least seven goals and hope Parish do them a favour by beating Bluebirds to avoid an immediate return to the First Division.
Although his club is facing a tall order, Vince Minors Jr, the Wolves vice-president and former player, is keeping his hopes alive.
“There’s still a chance and we just have to look forward to this last game,” he said.
“Hopefully, Social Club lose by a significant amount and just give it our all in our last game against Cougars.”
Elsewhere on Sunday, champions North Village host PHC Zebras at Bernard Park, Paget Lions entertain Devonshire Colts at Southampton Oval while St George’s Colts are up against Dandy Town at Wellington Oval.
