Nahki Wells leading assault on Premier League

Nahki Wells celebrates his tenth goal of the season against West Bromwich Albion

Nahki Wells feels he is peaking at the right time as he attempts to make an assault on the Premier League with Bristol City.

The Bermuda striker took his number of goals for the season to ten after scoring twice in four days this week in the Sky Bet Championship, with his latest effort coming in a 2-1 win over fellow promotion hopefuls West Bromwich Albion.

That victory lifted City up to fifth in the league and they occupy a play-off position with just five games of the regular season to play. Wells is now looking forward to a crucial month and is happy with his form.

“That’s double figures for the season and I’m very happy with that tally,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“Obviously I would always like more, but putting it into perspective, I have a really good minutes-to-goals ratio, and it’s almost one goal every two games. I’ve only started 21 games, so having ten goals in 21 starts is a really good return.”

The 34-year-old is pleasing the City fans after scoring in three successive home games as he holds down a place in head coach Liam Manning’s starting XI despite being out of contract in the summer.

“To score three in my last three at home is a great feeling,” Wells said. “It shows that I am finding form at the right time and I’m just trying to stay present, trying to stay focused and do my part to help us get over the line and into the play-offs. If we can, then we will reassess and try to go all the way.”

Wells gave City the lead with a fantastic curling effort from outside the box early in the second half during the game against West Brom before Haydon Roberts popped up with the winner in stoppage time.

“I was delighted with the result,” Wells said. “It was a really, really good performance from us, knowing where we are standing and how much of an important game it was.

“It was a six-pointer because West Brom are a side who are in contention for the play-offs themselves. We are competing with them directly for one of those last two places and it was a really big moment for the team and the club as we try to do what we’ve been unable to do before.

“We still have another five fixtures and we still need to pick up as many points as we can to give ourselves every chance. We really are just taking it one game at a time and trying to stay as present as possible, but also it is equally important that we understand how great of a moment it was to get that victory against West Brom. To pick up maximum points in our last three home games is a great feeling.”

Wells is no stranger to the promotion play-off scene after competing in them with former clubs Bradford City and Huddersfield Town.

“I am well aware of what this challenge holds because it’s not that easy,” he said.

“I’ve been able to do it twice now with Bradford and Huddersfield and it’s tough physically, mentally and emotionally to go all the way and do it. But I feel like we will be up for the task and we’ll take one game at a time and hopefully it can be third time lucky for myself.”

Next up for Wells is a trip to former club Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

“I’m going back to my old stomping ground, so there will be familiar places and familiar faces at a familiar club,” Wells said.

“It’s a place I’ve scored plenty of goals for QPR and as an opposing player. So I’ll be expecting to go there. try to keep the rich vein of form going and keep scoring goals.”
