Zeiko White out to end football career on glorious note
Zeiko White is hoping to bow out of top-flight football with an FA Cup winner’s medal.
The 37-year-old Devonshire Cougars captain is poised to lead his club for the last time when they square off against league champions North Village in the FA Cup final at Flora Duffy Stadium on Sunday.
“It feels nice to get back to the final and I am glad we made it as it’s my last one,” White told The Royal Gazette.
“I am going to be finished with Premier Division football after this match.”
The father of three feels the time is right to call time on his playing days partly due to growing family commitments and other responsibilities off the pitch.
“My decision to retire from the Premier Division wasn’t hard to make as I have other things going on in my life now that I have to deal with,” White said. “But I’m not retiring completely as I’m still going to play in the Corona League.”
The experienced player is making his fourth appearance in the FA Cup final and is one of the surviving members from the 2013 Triple Crown-winning Cougars team that beat Somerset Trojans 3-0 in the cup final.
“It’s a big game against North Village and it would mean a lot to me to go out as an FA Cup winner because a lot of the players I am playing with now haven't won it,” White said.
“A few guys asked me to stay this season so we can win something, and it would be nice to win something with the team I am with right now.”
Cougars, who have three FA Cup titles under their belt, are making their seventh appearance in the final and the first in 12 years. The game this weekend will also mark the first time that Cougars and Village have met in the FA Cup final.
The teams have one victory apiece in the league this season, with Village winning the first encounter 6-1 and Cougars the second 1-0. White is grateful to reach the FA Cup final given the challenges the side have faced this season.
“It’s an honour to get to the final and we worked hard to get there after what we went through first half of the season,” he said.
“A lot of things didn't go to plan but we just put our heads down and worked through it. The first half of the season wasn’t planned but in the second half of the season we have been going from strength to strength since the new year. Everybody has been tight and we have been building game by game.”
White is sure that his team-mates will bring their best against a Village outfit that has mostly had their number in recent seasons.
“The last three years they have been running riot over us but we are looking forward to this game and just have to stay humble and stick to the plan,” he said.
“The preparation is there; everybody is ready and everything is good. Hopefully we have a full team and no injuries.”
White started his career at Dandy Town before joining Cougars, where he made his Premier Division debut at the age of 18.
He would go on to win league and cup honours with the club, including the Triple Crown, made up of the league, Friendship Trophy and FA Cup.
“It’s been nice and the Triple Crown season is definitely one of the crowing moments of my career,” White said. “We were firing on all cylinders that season.”
