Village youngsters celebrate Under-18 tournament victory
Some of Bermuda’s most promising talent took to the stage as North Village played Somerset Trojans in the Under-18 Knockout Cup Final at National Stadium on Sunday.
Hoping to follow in the footsteps of legendary players like Shaun Goater, Ralph ‘Gumbo’ Bean (Village) and Clyde ‘Bunny’ Best (Somerset) just to name a few, the youngsters did not disappoint.
North Village prevailed over their western opponents 2-0 in an entertaining affair, which saw the players showcase their skills, which at times, was at a level beyond their age.
Village took the lead in the tenth minute when Amir Brangman rifled in a drive from 35 yards which sailed into the roof of the net beyond the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Khy Bean.
In the 23rd minute, Village goalkeeper Skyler Young kept his team in the game with a save with his feet from Patrick Dill who beat a defender before hitting a low shot.
Village doubled their lead in the 35th minute from a good build up down the left side which saw Nazri Butterfield square to an unmarked Gladwin Benjamin, who tucked in at the back post.
Somerset picked up the tempo after the restart in an attempt to cut the deficit. Kayden Bean tried to sneak a free kick in at the near post but the Village custodian was alert to smother the effort.
Deacon Wade had his inswinging free kick headed off the line by Shiloh Waite as the young Trojans pressed. They had the ball in the net in the 78th minute but it was disallowed as Isaiah Francis was adjudged to have fouled the goalkeeper in the build up.
Defender Elliott Proctor kept the deficit at two when he cleared off the line after Bean had fumbled a cross. The Trojans thought they had scored late in the game when Francis lobbed the goalkeeper only for the ball to graze the crossbar as Saezjhor Dent recovered to save off the line.
Village withstood the late pressure to close out the victory.
Dent, the MVP for the winning side, said his team had unfinished business after falling short in last year’s final.
“We played some off our best football today especially in the first half. We had something to prove to ourselves as we were losing finalists last year so hats off to the guys for getting the job done.
“I also feel good that I won the MVP award but it was a team effort,” Dent added.
Somerset captain and MVP Michari Tear Deleon was disappointed with the outcome and says his team can learn from the defeat.
“The loss is heartbreaking. I felt that we could have been a little more prepared. Our communication was off. We could have done things a little differently but today was just an off day for us”.
