Kane Crichlow looking up after ending season on high
Kane Crichlow brought his season to a fitting end by scoring in Chelmsford City’s 6-1 win over Weymouth on Saturday.
Crichlow scored his side’s fifth goal just a few days after picking up the players’ player of the season, the manager’s player of the season and the supporters’ player of the year honours at the club’s awards ceremony last week.
The 24-year-old was surprised to have racked up the awards and was especially pleased with the one voted for by his fellow players.
“It’s been a good season for me and I’m happy that was I able to receive the awards that I did get.” Crichlow said.
“My coach and my team-mates have put a lot of trust in me and it’s all paid off, so I’m happy for the season that I had. I was most surprised to win the players award as a lot of them say that I’m pretty chilled and quiet and all those kind of things, so it was great that they still recognised me as their favourite player.”
Crichlow has been with Chelmsford for only one season and puts his good form down to feeling comfortable on and off the pitch.
“I signed in July 2024 and it’s been good from the start,” he said.
“I was welcomed in by the players and staff, I haven’t had any problems and everything has been very professional. They also support me off the pitch as well as with my international games.
“It’s been going really well but unfortunately we were not able to improve our position and get in the play-offs, but it’s still been a good season and next season that is hopefully something we can achieve.”
Crichlow would be happy to extend his stay at Chelmsford but his form could well see him attract offers to play at a higher level than the National League South. If that opportunity arises he will grab it.
“There have been negotiations and talks and my agent has been the one handling it all, so we’ll just see what comes of it and see if we can agree on something,” Crichlow said.
“But every player’s dream is to progress in the league and play as high as they can, so we’ll just see what comes. I’ll be happy if I’m able to stay and if something higher comes along that’s something I’ll have to take.”
Crichlow has been one of the national team’s stars since Michael Findlay became head coach and recently scored the opening goal in Bermuda’s Concacaf Gold Cup preliminary round play-off first leg against Honduras.
“It’s pretty good at the moment and I’m really enjoying it,” Crichlow said.
“It’s nice to be able to come back for most games and play with old friends. The coach is a good coach, he puts a lot of trust and belief in me and all I try to do is repay that trust by performing and scoring when I can.”
Bermuda are next set to play in World Cup qualifiers in June and Crichlow will be keeping fit in the off-season to ensure he can play another prominent role.
“I’m going to stay in shape between the end of the season and then,” he said.
“I like the style of play, we try to play through the lines and the coach tries to get us to express ourselves on the pitch, especially with me as an attacking player and I think we are starting to gel really well.”
