Bermuda under-17 need two-goal win to qualify for World Cup

Bermuda under-17 men’s national team need to beat Honduras by two goals on Wednesday night if they are to qualify for the under-17 World Cup.

After losing their opening match 1-0 to Guyana before Honduras recorded a 4-2 triumph over the same team, Bermuda must defeat the host nation by two goals if they are to rise from the bottom of the group to top the table on goal difference and qualify for the under-17 World Cup in Qatar.

Bermuda were unlucky to lose against Guyana after dominating the game and coach Aaron Denkins knows his side will need to be in top form if they are to upset the odds and beat the top-ranked team in the group tonight (9pm Bermuda time).

“Honduras are a very good technical team with very good players,” Denkins told The Royal Gazette yesterday.

“We will have to be at our best to overcome them but the team is prepared and ready.”

After group H was reduced to three teams with the withdrawal of Suriname, Bermuda have had four days to prepare for the all-important encounter with Honduras.

“The team and staff have been preparing for the upcoming match intensely while balancing rest and recovery,” Denkins said.

“All players are available for selection and ready to make Bermuda proud. The coaching staff along with a very dedicated and supportive group of parents attended the Honduras versus Guyana match.”

With Denkins declaring all players fit, it means Zydon Lightbourne Furbert and Roman Wilkinson are available to play.

Lightbourne Furbert was withdrawn at half-time against Guyana because of an ankle injury, while Wilkinson did not feature at all after failing to make a recovery from a knock picked up prior to the start of the tournament.
