Luton Town striker Nahki Wells has expressed his delight to have booked another Wembley appearance after the Hatters secured their spot in the EFL Trophy Final courtesy of a 2-1 win over Northampton Town in the semi-final.

“Excited and happy to reach Wembley of course,” Wells, who scored in Luton’s hard fought semi-final win over Northampton, told The Royal Gazette.

“We are delighted knowing how the season has been with so many ups and downs. It’s given us a sense of focus and something that has helped galvanise the squad being we’ve been so inconsistent this season, which has been so unfortunate. It’s been a very positive thing for us and something we are all looking forward to.”

The Hatters made the most of a second opportunity in the competition after they were originally knocked out by League Two side Swindon Town. However, Swindon were thrown out of the competition after an investigation revealed that they had fielded two ineligible players in the Vertu Trophy Round of 16 tie on January 13 with Luton being reinstated by EFL Trophy organisers.

Swindon captain Ollie Clarke started the match while he was already serving a suspension and Aaron Drinan was used as a substitute despite not appearing on the teamsheet.

“The cup run did have its twists and turns along the way and we would have liked to have had better results in the early stages,” Wells said.

“We won some fixtures and made it through and then was beaten by Swindon. But they fielded two ineligible players that allowed us to get back in.

“I only just started featuring in the last two fixtures as I was not involved for the vast majority of the early fixtures.”

Wells cancelled out Kyle MacAdams’s strike for Northampton before team-mate Liam Walsh grabbed a late winner to send Luton on their way to Wembley in an evenly fought EFL Trophy semi-final.

Jack Wilshere’s team will now square off with League One rivals Stockport County in the final on April 12.

“We play Stockport, a very good side close to the top end of the table who we know. We played them away and beat them 3-0, but obviously a good side near the top of the table for a reason,” Wells said.

“A real good football side with some real threats, so it will be an interesting final between two sides that want to play on a really big pitch and a good surface, and perform to the best of their capabilities.

“For us it’s just important we deal with what we have to deal with up until that final week and then we can really turn our heads towards that as our league campaign is still a huge priority, even though it seems as if it’s slipping away by the week.

“We will stay as present as we can and just try and finish as strong as we possibly can because it’s been such an inconsistent run in the league, which has left us with no real option but to have to win every game from now until the end of the season.”

Luton are eleventh in the League One table with 48 points, seven adrift of Wells’ former club Huddersfield who occupy the final play-off spot, with eleven fixtures remaining.

Wells is no stranger to Wembley having made two appearances at the iconic stadium with Bradford in the Capital One Cup Final and League Two Play-off Final and another with Huddersfield Town in the League One Play-off Final.

The 35-year-old also scored against Northampton in Bradford’s 3-0 triumph in the 2013 League Two Play-off Final to become the first Bermudian to do so at the new Wembley Stadium.

That feat arrived just shy of three months after becoming the first Bermudian to play at the London venue in the Bantams’ 5-0 defeat to then Premier League opponents Swansea City in the Capital One Cup Final.

He was also a member of Carlisle United’s squad that reached the EFL Trophy Final in 2011 but was left out of the match day squad.
