The Bermuda Football Association is looking for a new coach for the senior men’s national team after parting ways with Michael Findlay.

Findlay, who assumed the role in August 2023, leaves just days before the national team are scheduled to play an international friendly against potential World Cup qualifiers Democratic Republic of Congo in Mexico.

According to a BFA statement, the decision was a mutual one.

“The Bermuda Football Association and head coach Michael Findlay have mutually decided to part ways effective today,” the statement read.

“Coach Findlay oversaw the senior men’s national team activities and provided support to the U23 and U20 teams over the course of his tenure.

“During his time with the Gombey Warriors, Coach Findlay has been a part of some firsts for Bermuda, and we are grateful for his experience. The team reached the Concacaf Gold Cup Prelims and the final round of the Concacaf Qualifiers Road to the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Warriors also participated in the first FIFA Series in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

We thank Coach Findlay for his service to the game in Bermuda. The Senior Men’s team programming and commitments through the Fifa March International window will be overseen by Maurice Lowe, BFA Technical Development Director, while the Player Development Committee completes its work to appoint a new head coach.”

An obvious candidate to replace Findlay could well be Bermudian legend Shaun Goater, who recently left his role at Aston Villa Women and is seeking a new challenge in football.

The high point of Findlay’s tenure came when Bermuda beat Cuba 2-1 in Havana to reach the final round of World Cup qualifying for the first time. But Bermuda picked up just one point from their six group games after drawing 2-2 against Trinidad & Tobago in November in what turned out to be Findlay’s last game in charge.

That performance came after a number of heavy defeats, including 7-0 and 4-0 losses at home to Curacao and Jamaica respectively, with Findlay’s departure meaning every country in that World Cup group have now changed managers.

Jamaica coach Steve McClaren resigned after failing to make it through automatically as group winners, Dick Advocaat resigned after steering Curacao to the World Cup to care for his ill daughter and Dwight Yorke left his position after declining to take a cut in salary.

In all Bermuda played 26 games with Findlay at the helm, winning nine, drawing four and losing 13.

Those wins came against Belize and St Vincent and the Grenadines in the Nations League in 2023; Brunei in the Fifa Series in March 2024; Antigua & Barbuda (twice) and Dominica (twice) in the 2024 Nations League and Cayman Islands and Cuba in World Cup qualifying last year.
