Inflation at 2.3%, new government figures show

Yo-yo: inflation levels according to the consumer price index report

Inflation was measured at 2.3 per cent in the latest government figures released today that showed large rises in some key areas.

The Ministry of Economy and Labour released the Department of Statistics' August 2024 Consumer Price Index.

A spokesman said: “In summary, consumers paid 2.3 per cent more in August 2024 than a year ago for the basket of goods and services included in the consumer price index.”

Key highlights for August 2023 to August 2024 include a rise of 7.2 per cent in fuel and power and a 3.5 per cent increase in food.

Other areas include:

• The health and personal care division increased 3.3 per cent

• The rent division increased 1.9 per cent

• The education, recreation, entertainment and reading division increased 2.5 per cent

In terms of the monthly rise between July and August, the average cost of goods and services increased 0.2 per cent.

Between July and August:

• The transport and foreign travel division increased by 1.4 per cent

• The fuel and power division rose 2.7 per cent

• The education, recreation, entertainment and reading division increased 0.1 per cent

• The tobacco and liquor division increased 0.5 per cent
