Saying goodbye to Kewin, the Bermuda Customs dog
Sometimes, in the daily process of being a vet, something happens which really restores your faith in humanity, compassion and respect. I had just such an incident the other day.
I was asked to work with one of the retired customs dogs, Kewin. You will have seen these fabulous creatures as you come through the airport. They are responsible for sniffing the suitcases, bags and travellers for certain illegal substances. Their reward for their diligent work is a good play with a ball, which if you have ever seen these dogs play, is a joy to behold.
For the most part, these dogs are Belgian malinois by breed. They are known to be smart, confident, and versatile. A world-class worker who forges an unbreakable bond with their human partner. They are squarely built, strong and well-muscled, but more elegant than bulky. They love to exercise and are never happier than when standing side by side with their adored handler.
I, like many other travellers, have watched these beautiful dogs go about their work in our airport for years.
Therefore, it was my great honour, with a heavy heart, to be able to be present and assist with the peaceful, respectful and compassionate end to the life of the Bermuda Customs Department’s dog, Kewin.
He had some significant health issues and although mentally wanted to continue to do all that he had previously been able to achieve, his old body just could not keep up. He had been retired from work and spoilt with everything he liked most, which was primarily tennis balls, but his quality of life was deteriorating and a painful decision had to be made.
The day and time were set and I found myself sadly in familiar territory. What I had not anticipated, however, was the response of his fellow customs co-workers. The ladies and gentlemen of the Bermuda Customs Department came out in force with a show of love and support for this dog, which truly touched me.
They all took time to say their personal goodbyes. Some read poetry, some said prayers and others offered support. They told stories of his long working life and of the loyal service to Bermuda, he had provided. They acknowledged him not as a dog, but as a respected colleague and one that they would obviously very much miss.
There were many tears but also laughter and love and it occurred to me that this group of professionals did all they could to make Kewin’s final moments just as he would want them. They knew and understood him and the respect they had for this amazing dog and his service to Bermuda was real and very touching.
I wanted to share this tribute to Kewin, the Bermuda Customs Department dog, and say thank you for his loyal work. I know he will be greatly missed by his fellow workers.
