Virtual onion drop for St George New Year
King’s Square in St George’s will be empty on New Year’s Eve – but the world will still be able to watch the traditional onion drop.
The Corporation of St George is move its festivities to the internet with an online comedy show featuring Nadanja Bailey.
Mr Bailey said he had hoped to host his fourth New Year celebration in the historic town this year, but the pandemic had forced the Corporation to take a different approach.
But he added: “The Corporation still wanted to do something – I told them I still have some footage that they could use and it all just came together.”
Mr Bailey said the show would feature 90 minutes of pre-recorded comedy from himself and his “Two Fools” partner Jah Simmons, with the onion drop as the climax to the show.
He said: “I think it’s going to be a great reminder for all the fans of the Two Fools and a good introduction to the people who know nothing about us.
“I’m grateful for the Corporation of St George for still wanting to do something for the people of Bermuda.”
Mr Bailey added that he was pleased to get another opportunity to entertain the public in a difficult year.
He said: “All of my comedian friends here and in the US are missing the stage like crazy.
“Covid makes you realise what your passions are, and my passion is entertainment.”
The free online event will be broadcast on the Corporation of St George website and will start at 10.30pm.
