A Royal Navy ship deployed for disaster relief and as part of the war on drugs is to spend the next month in Bermuda.

HMS Medway, a patrol ship, is due to arrive today after spending the last year patrolling the North Atlantic.

Bermuda will be home to the ship and her crew for an extended break from duty throughout February.

The ship will also undergo a crew rotation, supplies replenishment and undertake a training programme to ensure sailors are operate safely while deployed.

The training package will take place inside and outside of Bermuda’s territorial waters.

The crew will also be carrying out exercises alongside the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard.

The ship first visited Bermuda in February last year at the start of her deployment.

The ship’s duties include counter-narcotics operations, and emergency humanitarian assistance for natural disasters such as hurricanes.

The deployment is also used to promote good relationships with key partners in the region.

HMS Medway seized 650kg of narcotics in the Caribbean last year and saw significant amounts of contraband ditched in the ocean by suspected drug smugglers.
