Busy January as firefighters tackle more than 300 calls
Firefighters responded to more than 300 emergency calls last month, it was revealed today.
A Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said that, of 173 of the 301 calls logged needed emergency medical services.
The Hamilton Station, which responds to emergency calls from the central parishes, got the most calls at 138.
A total of 54 were for emergency medical services and four were for emergency special services, which included flooding, clean-up after road traffic accidents or drivers locked out of their vehicles.
The Hamilton station also dealt with 80 fire-related calls, with 71 calls as a result of automatic fire alarms, five for telephone pole fires, two for oven fires, one for an electrical fire and one for a trash fire.
Clearwater Station, which covers the eastern parishes, got 105 calls.
The spokesman said that 85 were for emergency medical services and 76 required the presence of a fire truck and an ambulance.
The station also tackled 18 automatic calls from fire alarms and two flooding incidents.
Port Royal Station in the west got 58 calls - the fewest of the three stations.
A total of 34 callers needed emergency medical services and two were flooding incidents.
A total of 22 calls were for fire-related incidents - 18 automatic calls from fire alarms, three telephone pole fires and one a call about a controlled burn that became a nuisance to neighbours.
