Belco turns in initial report on December power outage
An initial report about an island-wide power outage last year has been submitted to electricity industry watchdogs.
Denton Williams, the Regulatory Authority of Bermuda chief executive, said: “While we are in receipt of a preliminary report from Belco, we are currently awaiting the final report.
“It would be premature for us to comment until we have seen the definitive final report.”
A Belco spokesman said last month that the company’s investigation into the December 18, 2020 outage was “almost complete”.
He added that a report would be submitted to the RA “in due course”.
The spokesman said yesterday: “Belco is committed to transparency and once a final report has been submitted, the company will provide further updates.”
A Government spokeswoman said that the Ministry of Home Affairs would wait for a report from the Regulatory Authority “with any assessments and recommendations”.
Dennis Pimentel, the Belco president, said in December that early indications suggested the incident was caused by mechanical failure.
He added that a “cascade of built-in safety mechanisms” was triggered that “ultimately shut off power to the entire island”.
Walter Roban, the home affairs minister, said at the time that he expected a report “as a matter of urgency”.
The outage hit at about 10.20am and power was restored to all Belco customers within nine hours.
