Medical expenses fundraiser launched for singer
A fund set up to help pay massive medical bills for a singer with a life-threatening condition has raised almost $50,000 in just two days.
The appeal was launched after Latosha Codrington, who won the Bermuda Idol singing contest in 2013, suffered a heart attack on Tuesday.
The mother-of-three later developed a blood clot in an artery and needs urgent medical treatment overseas.
An appeal launched on GoFundMe platform and has so far raised $46,785 from almost 450 contributors.
Ms Codrington, 37, is unemployed, but sings at church services and other functions and often gives free performances.
She is also a member of the Proud To Be Bermudian choir.
Ms Codrington’s treatment, including the cost of an air ambulance to fly her to the Lahey Hospital in Boston, is expected to cost around $100,000.
The GoFundMe appeal page, set up by a cousin, said: “Latosha is currently in the ICU with a blood clot blocking one of her arteries causing her to have a hard time breathing.
“Her doctor wants to have her sent to Boston on an air ambulance to have an emergency procedure done to remove the blood clot.
“She does not have insurance or a passport at this time and does not have the finances to cover these expenses.
“Latosha is a mother of three, a sister, a daughter, a cousin and a friend.
“We appreciate every donation and ask that you keep Latosha in your prayers.”
Ms Codrington’s aunt, Francine Lee, told The Royal Gazette that her niece started to feel ill on Tuesday.
Ms Lee added: “She said she felt as if someone had stabbed her in the chest.”
Ms Codrington is being treated in the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but is expected to travel to Boston this week.
Ms Lee said: “We’re just so incredibly grateful to the community – everybody who has come together to help Latosha.”
