International Women’s Day to be marked next Tuesday
International Women’s Day will be celebrated next week.
The IWD Bermuda Committee invited participants to take pictures at the purple flower wall at Hamilton City Hall.
Purple symbolises women’s suffrage.
Guests at next Tuesday“s event will be invited to post on social media in solidarity with the event and its 2022 theme, #BreakTheBias.
Patrina “Power Girl” O’Connor-Paynter will MC, with the Woman of the Year highlighted at 1pm.
Charles Gosling, the Mayor of Hamilton, will deliver an opening speech.
The opening will be attended by David Burt, the Premier, with Alison Crocket, the Deputy Governor.
Coral Beats Drummers will perform at 12.30pm and J & B’s Wood Fire Pizza and Ashley’s Lemonade will be on sale throughout the celebration.
Katarina Hoskins, the committee founder and cochairwoman, said it was the seventh year of marking the event, which went virtual last year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
But with more sponsors and organisations taking part, the day has returned as an in-person celebration.
Cordelia Davis, a partner at professional services firm EY and financial accounting advisory services leader for the Bahamas, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands, said the firm was honoured to be the founding sponsor.
She added: “EY believes that gender equality is not a problem to solve – rather, gender equality is a solution to businesses and society’s most complex challenges.
“By each of us committing to one small action we can collectively make a big difference to close the gender gap.”
Groups or organisations who want to attend the event, which will run between 10am and 3pm, should contact Lauren Stone at stoney38@hotmail.com.
Part of the funds raised will be given to the Women’s Resource Centre, with IWD cookies on sale for a $8 donation.
