Call to show support during international Pride Month
A gay rights campaigner is calling on residents to make sure that everyone — regardless of their sexuality — matters.
Taj Donville-Outerbridge made the plea today, the start of international Pride Month.
Mr Donville-Outerbridge said: “Today marks the start of the universally celebrated Pride Month.
“I believe this is an opportunity to both reflect on how far we have come as a community as well as chart a course to create a Bermuda, and a world, where everyone not only belongs, but matters.”
“This Pride Month I challenge everyone to not only post support on social media but to turn their words into action.”
Mr Donville-Outerbridge highlighted four ways in which residents can demonstrate their support.
He said: “Reach out to an LGBTQ+ identifying person and let them know you support them and their journey and are a safe space for them to come to.
“If you have an office, signposting that you and your space are LGBTQ+ welcoming is helpful.
“Educate yourself on terminology, current issues and the needs of both the local and global LGBTQ+ community.
“Donate to charities and organisations that support the local LGBTQ+ community in meaningful ways. OutBermuda is a good place to start.
“And lastly, petition your area MP to make a public statement of support of LGBTQ+ community, champion the development and implementation of comprehensive sex education in all schools and to encourage the adequate training of educators, healthcare professionals and social workers who will interact with LGBTQ+ people.”
Mr Donville-Outerbridge said that, although not exhaustive, his recommendations could make a start in making members of the LGBTQ+ community feel more inclusive.
He added: “We still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do. Let’s all work together to make Bermuda a truly inclusive and equitable society for all.”
