A marquee 40ft-by-5ft Bermuda sign is set to be erected in Hamilton in an effort to create photographic opportunities for visitors.

According to a recently filed planning application, the sign would be installed on a cycle parking area adjacent to the Bermuda Visitors Centre on Front Street.

The application by the City of Hamilton said: “The surrounding area is the ferry terminal to the west and the Historic Protection Area comprising of retail shops on the ground floor of Front Street.

“The proposed marquee sign has a footprint of approximately 40ft by 2ft 6in and is 5ft 10in in overall height with Bermuda-themed aluminium panels making up each letter.

“The proposed location offers the general public opportunities to photograph themselves at the marquee sign with views of Hamilton Harbour and White’s Island in the background which will enhance the amenity potential and public use of Hamilton’s waterfront as per the City of Hamilton’s Plan.”

The application added that the sign would improve the area and draw members of the public to the waterfront without affecting future development of the site.

Similar marquee signs have been erected at numerous destinations around the world and have proven popular sites for photographs.

A city spokeswoman said: “We are excited that the Bermuda marquee sign project is progressing and believe it will create an iconic piece of public art that celebrates the local arts community and Bermudian culture.

“The sign is currently in fabrication and we will provide more details as the project advances.”

The sign, designed by Keeon Minors of Lead x Design, beat out dozens of other proposals in a public competition as a part of last year’s VIVD: Public Art Initiative.

Jessica Astwood, the city’s director of marketing and communications, said at the time: “With this project, we wanted to create an iconic sign that people would be drawn to and want to engage with — one that would also celebrate the local arts community and Bermudian culture, and we feel that Keeon’s design will do just that.”
