Thousands of food fans flocked to Front Street today for a feast of culinary delights offered up by a range of island restaurants and fast food bars.

The street festival, which closed the main stretch of Front Street off to traffic for the afternoon and into the evening, was the culmination of a three-day event organised by the Corporation of Hamilton.

More than 4,000 revellers crowded Hamilton’s iconic street to sample everything from pizza and burgers to sushi and slow-roasted spare ribs.

And the verdict appeared to be unanimous.

“What a great afternoon – great fun and great food,” said Bill Tucker, from Southampton.

The corporation had called in celebrity chef Anne Burrell to headline the event. On Thursday Ms Burrell was grilled during a Q&A session with Bermuda College culinary students.

On Friday night, hundreds of guests gathered for an evening of elegant dining at what has been described as Bermuda’s longest table – a stretch of white linen that ran the length of Front Street.

But the final event was more T-shirt than tuxedo – street food, in all its forms and from all over the world, was the order of the day – and was wolfed down by eager epicureans.

Eleanor Brody, visiting Bermuda with her family from Boston, said: “What a great event. I’m loving it. Bermuda needs to do more of this.”

Ms Burrell gave a cooking demonstration in front of hundreds of onlookers – and didn’t miss a step in the heat of the kitchen.

A spokeswoman for the Corporation of Hamilton declared the event a success.

She said: “This is exactly what this sort of event is all about – bringing people together to celebrate the City, celebrate Bermuda, and celebrate our culture.

“We have had more than 4,000 people here today – both visitors and residents. And that’s not including more than 35 vendors who have all worked hard and given their time. Everybody has really enjoyed themselves.

“We’re trying to work together, to bring everyone together, to revitalise the economy. This is what it’s all about.”
