A final fire service report about an explosion that claimed the lives of two people has been received by the Bermuda Police Service, a BPS spokesman said.

Oscar and Jove Mascarinas died after the blast that gutted an apartment block in Southampton.

Police inquiries into the matter continued on Wednesday – which marked six months since the incident.

A police spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service can confirm it has received a final report from the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, in relation to the fatal explosion which occurred at Hilltop Court, Southampton on May 2, 2022.

“However, the BPS investigation into this matter remains ongoing.

“As such, we are unable to provide any further information at this time.”

Three other people were injured in the blast, which collapsed part of the apartment block at about 8.50pm.

Police said at the time that, although it was early in the investigation, it appeared the explosion was caused by a gas leak.

Mr Mascarinas, 49, and his 50-year-old wife were guest workers from the Philippines.

Mrs Mascarinas’s work included child minding, while her husband was a popular member of staff at Aberfeldy Nurseries, Paget, who tended plant displays in offices and businesses across the island.
