A blaze that broke out in thick undergrowth near the Transport Control Department on the west side of Pembroke Dump was subdued over several hours by firefighters.

There were no injuries in the fire, which swept over several acres of the marsh but did not appear to reach TCD, the Marsh Folly depot or the dump itself.

The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service said that an investigation was under way.

After the fire was reported at 11.30pm on December 30 near the junction of Dutton Avenue and Marsh Folly Road in Pembroke, 16 firefighters responded with two ladder vehicles, two fire appliances, a high-volume unit and a water tender, as well as command cars.

Vehicles began arriving at 11.40pm and were stationed near TCD on North Street, watched by onlookers, as scattered fires cut through dense undergrowth.

An area roughly 100ft by 100ft was ablaze, a BFRS officer said.

He added: “Firefighters used the high volume unit, which carries over a mile of six-inch hose, to pump water from No 8 Dock on Front Street to Pembroke Dump.

“This required traffic to be diverted. The aerial ladder vehicles allowed firefighters to fight the blaze from above.”

The road was blocked at Bernard Park as a blanket of smoke rolled to the northwest. Firefighters also kept watch from Marsh Folly Road.

The BFRS said parts of the fire were too deep in the marsh to be reached by crews.

The blaze, the biggest in the area for several years, was watched by residents from high points around the dump.

It spread through undergrowth despite there having been heavy rain this week.

The surrounding area was wet down to contain the fire and a fire watch set up to ensure no further spread.
