The number of saplings planted on a “tree farm” in the centre of Hamilton has more than doubled after the plot was extended.

Donleigh Park, on Par-la-Ville Road, has been home to 19 young trees planted by the Corporation of Hamilton.

The park was extended after a property on a neighbouring site was demolished last September.

A corporation crew has spent the past few weeks resurfacing the site with topsoil.

This week a further 26 trees — including eight cedars — were planted.

The saplings, which are supported by metal rods and housed in special pots to encourage downward root growth, typically take about three years to mature. They are then transferred to various sidewalk locations throughout the City.
