Customs officers will be recognised for their crucial work as border organisations around the world prepare for International Customs Day.

The customs department will hold several events this week in the run up to the day, on Thursday.

Lucinda Pearman, the Collector of Customs, said: "The customs department continues to play an important role in the Bermuda economy by meeting its mission of protecting Bermuda's border and promoting economic development.

"We are committed to the continued economic development of the island and protecting Bermuda's borders."

The World Customs Organisation has dedicated 2023 to “nurturing the next generation” and “promoting a culture of knowledge-sharing and professional pride in customs”.

Events started with a virtual church service to honour fallen customs officers in Bermuda.

Today, several customs officers will attend Port Royal Primary School in Southampton to entertain and educate pupils and staff about the role that they play.

Current and former customs officers have been invited to participate in the annual Colin Smith Road Race in St David’s tomorrow.

On Thursday, the department will honour its employees during two awards ceremonies.

Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, said: "I am pleased to recognise the professionalism of the women and men who make up our customs department.

“They are Bermuda's unsung heroes and I look forward to joining them on Thursday to both celebrate International Customs Day and present long-serve awards to employees who have made a career of the service."
