Belco hopes more women will apply for company opportunities
Women employees of Belco were highlighted in celebration of International Women’s Day.
The energy company said it is continuously trying to improve female representation and that of its 237 full-time staff members, 38 are women.
While the physical work operating the plant and maintaining the distribution grid has traditionally been dominated by men, women are increasingly taking on these roles.
A spokesman said Belco is represented on the established global Diversity and Inclusion Council, which aims to develop a more diverse, equitable and inclusive approach.
Krista Barnes, the company’s director of communications and sustainability, added: “We have a long history of supporting our staff and we are proud of the strides made in diversity, equity and inclusion in recent years.
“As we move towards a more sustainable future, we are constantly learning and implementing new strategies to improve.
“Ensuring we take a diverse, equitable and inclusive centric approach will assist us in attracting and retaining top talent, while also ensuring our customers are receiving the highest calibre of service and care possible.
“As we strive to continuously evolve and progress, we recognise further opportunities for growth and improvement and look forward to progressing the role of women in our company in the future.”
Women were “strongly” encouraged to apply for careers, scholarships, internships and apprenticeships with the company.
Last year, of the 13 scholarships and awards presented, five women were recipients and during the summer of 2022 the company hired 20 interns, of which 11 were female.
Separately, Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, highlighted the role of women in uniformed services after he attended a networking event at the Police Recreation Club in honour of International Women’s Day.
He said: “There is no better example of equality and promotion within the security services than what we have within our ministry, which encompasses the police service, corrections, customs, the regiment and fire and rescue service.”
