Coast Guard to add more personnel
The Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard continues to expand and evolve with new hires and training.
Michael Weeks, the Minister of National Security, told the House of Assembly yesterday that four new boatswain’s mates would be in office by June 5, and 13 part-time personnel will be integrated into the operational support diving section.
He added that there has been an emphasis on training — including online training under Blue Belt and Blue Belt Ocean Shield programmes, focused on fisheries enforcement — and investment in new equipment.
“Our aim is to build a first class Coast Guard for the benefit of Bermuda, hence the significant focus on training,” Mr Weeks said. “Over the past year, training has been robust and far-reaching.
“The Coast Guard is actively enhancing capability via the acquisition and upgrading of specialised tools and equipment.
“In March, body camera commissioning was completed and the standard operating procedures are being documented and finalised.”
Mr Weeks added that the Coast Guard continues to help enforce maritime law and respond to emergencies.
“Warmer weather brings increased maritime activity. Bermuda can be assured that our Coast Guard is well prepared and is growing in capacity and capability with a focus on standards, operations and a well-trained cadre of officers to monitor and protect our maritime environment and ensure the safety of all as we enjoy our summer season on, in and around Bermuda’s majestic water,” he said.
