Community groups in the Town of St George have received $100,000 from Unesco to help to preserve the World Heritage Site.

The money, which is being distributed by the Corporation of St George, is aimed at boosting the town’s image.

The Friends of St Peter’s Church was given $40,000 towards clock restoration and maintenance.

The Salvation Army received $30,000 for the exterior painting of its building and the St George’s Foundation has been given $20,000 to help with the cost of cleaning the area’s forts.

In addition, the St George’s Crown, a town newspaper, received $10,000 towards documenting town life and promoting its history, heritage and culture.

George Dowling III, the Mayor of St George, said: “The corporation is sincerely passionate about seeing the town grow and prosper.

“We understand that it is important that we sufficiently invest in our people and their programmes to make lives better for those that live and work in our historical town.”
