Marissa named Mother of the Year
A devoted mother of three who listens to her children and encourages them in everything they do has been named Mother of the Year.
Marissa Dyer was nominated by her daughter, A’Mariss, who entered an essay competition organised by the Continental Society ahead of Mother’s Day tomorrow.
In her essay, A’Mariss, a Year Three student at West Pembroke Primary, said she would not know what she would do without her mother.
She wrote: “My mom takes me to my appointments on time. My mom helps me train for my races.
“She supports me in my races. She takes care of me when I’m sick. She listens to my stories I bring home.”
More than 100 Year Three and Year Four pupils from seven primary schools entered the competition, which has been running for 54 years.
Ms Dyer and her daughter were presented with the award at a school assembly this week.
Wow I say, I have the best gift I could have ever asked for. I have the best mother ever! My mom has brown eyes just like me. My mom once told me that I make her smile not just because I do amazing things, but because I was gifted to her.
My mom takes me to my appointments on time. My mom helps me train for my races. She supports me in my races. She takes care of me when I’m sick. She listens to my stories I bring home.
My mom cooks good and healthy food for me. When she asks me what do I want for dinner I say your famous healthy dinner.
I don’t know what I would do without my mother. She pushes me to my levels. My mother tells me every day when you grow up you will be a superstar.
She also says ‘you will be my hero’. My mother should be Mother of the Year because she helps and cares for other people and also me.
Ms Dyer said: “This is all very surreal to me. I’m always second-guessing myself when it comes to my children. Being a mother of three, I am forever putting myself on the back burner, as I live for my kids’ wants and needs.
“A’Mariss and I share a very special bond. She’s always vocal about how much she loves me and happy that I’m her mom.
“A’Mariss is very intelligent and ambitious. Anything she puts her mind to, she succeeds at. That’s something I admire about her. I’m truly humbled by this award as it is reassurance that all my hard work, patience and tears do not go unnoticed. My strength comes from raising my children.”
