Residents urged to get involved in St David’s regeneration
East End residents are being encouraged to join a working group to help to further develop a draft community plan.
The St David’s Draft Community Plan was launched in August last year to rebuild and improve the area over the course of five to ten years.
Now people are being encouraged to join the working group and offer their feedback on ways to improve St David’s.
A government spokesman said: “Many St David's community members have expressed an interest in helping to facilitate improvements in the area and have formed the St David's Community Plan Working Group.
“Deep ties and a genuine love of St David's and its unique history are some of the reasons given by these volunteers as to why they want to contribute their time and efforts to help enhance the lives of those who live in the area and to create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone who visits.”
Organisers of the St David’s Community Plan have six goals that they hope to expand on, which include revitalising parks, establishing a community centre and building a grocery store in the area.
They also hope to better preserve and capitalise on St David’s heritage sites through initiatives such as the memorial plaque and rock at Annie’s Bay honouring the sacrifices of St David’s islanders.
Other goals include building a greater sense of community identity and supporting the growth of St David’s infrastructure and natural environment.
The government spokesman said that projects to restore the ecosystem have already taken place, such as clearing invasive species from Stocks Harbour Nature Reserve and planting mangrove trees in their place.
Consultation with the public is open until June 30 and individuals can continue to review the Draft St David’s Community Plan’s documents or give feedback through the Bermuda Citizen’s Forum.
