‘Relay’ public lecture to discuss cahow genetic project
Scientists working to unlock the secrets of the cahow are set to speak at the Bermuda College on Saturday as part of a “relay” public lecture.
The free lecture will task each of the speakers to address the audience for 15 minutes about the Bermuda Cahow Genetic Project before “passing the baton” to the next speaker.
Jason Howard, a scientist at MiRXES and a former programme coordinator for Bird 10K Project and Vertebrate Genome Project at Duke and Rockefeller University, will start the lecture highlighting the global context to the project.
He will be followed by Jeremy Madeiros, terrestrial conservation officer with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’, who will detail cahow conservation efforts on the island and how genetic samples were collected from cahows.
The lecture will continue with Carika Weldon and Tahdaé Tucker, genetic scientists from CariGenetics, who will discuss the launch of the Cahow Genetic Project and data generation.
The lecture will conclude with Miten Jain, professor at Northeastern University, and Karamoko Dickens of Conci who will talk about the data analysis work that led to genome assembly
The free lecture is scheduled to start at 2pm at the Bermuda College’s North Hall Lecture Theatre.
