Bermudians can leave their mark on the island by helping to rebuild its largest resort, Donna Harvey Maybury, the director of talent and culture at the Fairmont Southampton, said at a construction career fair yesterday.

In the first hour of the event, dozens of people met companies that will be involved in the renovation and expansion of the hotel.

Ms Harvey Maybury said: “People who contribute to this project could be a part of modern history, like the people who built the original hotel were part of our history.

“They can refurbish the hotel so it can last more than 50 years.”

Thaao Dill, the director of programming at the Adult Education School, said: “The jobs available for some people can come with academic and professional requirements.

“We are here today to ensure that people meet those requirements.

“Bermudian hands, bodies and minds are required to deliver on this iconic project.”

Frazee, a US contractor, is working with D&J Construction to renovate the interior guest rooms, bathrooms and indoor public spaces at the hotel.

Company president Clark Frazee said he hoped to have as many Bermudians on the project as possible and is looking for enthusiastic workers to join the team.

Sheena Daniels, human resources manager at D&J, said: “We are also looking for respectfulness, attentiveness and the ability to be a team player.”

Marc DeVertueil, chief engineer at BCM Construction, has worked in the field for more than 30 years and encouraged others to get involved.

He said: “Construction is a wide and varied industry, and it is very rewarding to see something completed.”

The fair was held in the hotel’s lobby and will continue today from 4pm to 7pm.

Anyone over the age of 18 can apply for the available jobs.
