Bermuda Philharmonic to hold a ‘pops’ concert
Dockyard will echo with the sound of music on July 1 as the Bermuda Philharmonic performs a concert inspired by the rich history of cinema.
Kate Kayaian, of the Bermuda Philharmonic, said that the concert, “A Night at the Movies”, marks the philharmonic’s return to “pops” concerts after more than a decade.
“It has been a very long time, and people have talked to me about it and how the Summer Pops were always such wonderful experiences.
“It feels fantastic to return to this. It’s something we haven’t really done with this iteration of the philharmonic.
“We have done several concerts at St John’s Church, but we are excited to bring something bigger and more community directed on July 1.”
The concert will feature music from a wide variety of films, including blockbuster franchises such as Star Wars, Harry Potter and various James Bond films, with the philharmonic joined on stage by singers Joy T. Barnum and Indigo Adamson for the performance.
Ms Kayaian said that the theme of “A Night at the Movies” was chosen because of the broad appeal and accessibility of film.
“Everybody loves movies, and going to see a movie is something that many people do as a family,” she said.
“It’s something that’s familiar to so many people in the community. Many people have never been to a classical concert before, but they know the music of Star Wars.”
Ms Kayaian said that one of the things she loves most about the Bermuda Philharmonic is that it represents a broad cross-section of the island brought together by a common passion.
“We have doctors and lawyers, teachers and students, members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment,” she said. “It really feels like a great community coming together.”
She said that the concert will take place under a tent in Dockyard’s Victualling Yard, with ticket-holders able to sit in the tent or bring their own picnic chairs or blankets and enjoy from the lawn.
Ms Kayaian added that organisers have hired a charter boat to bring people from Dockyard to Hamilton after the concert as the public ferries stop running at 7pm.
The nearby Frog and Onion will have food and drinks available, while several food trucks will also be on site.
• “A Night at the Movies” will run from 6pm to 8pm on July 1, with tickets available online at www.bermudaphilharmonic.org. Tickets to the event cost $65 for adults and $35 for children and seniors. Boat charter tickets can also be purchased for $10 at the Bermuda Philharmonic website, with boats leaving Dockyard at 8.15pm and 10pm
