Jeopardy contestant answers Bermuda with shorts, Triangle clue
A contestant on one of America’s most popular quiz shows was not caught short as he guessed that the answer to a question was Bermuda after the island’s most famous contribution to fashion was alluded to as part of a clue.
Jeopardy, the long-running prime-time staple of US network television, also used a reference to the Bermuda Triangle to help players along.
On Tuesday night’s programme, a category entitled “Love Island UK” posed questions about Britain’s Overseas Territories.
The clue for Bermuda was: “About 700 miles southeast of New York City and home to around 70,000 people, it is known for its shorts and some troublesome triangulation.”
One contestant immediately buzzed to give the correct answer.
Later in the round, a far more pointed clue was used to try and elicit the name of the Cayman Islands.
Players were teased with: “George Town is the capital of this three-island territory known for low taxes and … how to put it … interesting handling of international money.”
The identity of the Caribbean territory was guessed immediately.
However, all three contestants failed to recognise the Falkland Islands in a further question in the category.
The clue given was: “Remain — in 2013 people in this South Atlantic territory were nearly unanimous in their vote to stay under British rule.”
One Jeopardy player ventured the answer as Jamaica, while a second contestant thought the question referred to Australia.
Jamaica and Australia are independent nations within the Commonwealth and are seriously debating whether to maintain ties with the British monarchy.
Jeopardy runs five nights a week on US TV and has also sparked celebrity editions, with CNN anchor Anderson Cooper acting as host of the show for a run.
