Premier’s Concert postponed for union leader’s funeral
A celebration in music of Bermuda’s National Heroes has been postponed out of respect for the late trade unionist Ottiwell Simmons.
The annual Premier’s Concert, which was scheduled for Sunday at the Earl Cameron Theatre in City Hall, was called off after notice that the funeral of Mr Simmons would be going ahead at 3pm that day in St Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hamilton.
The Department of Culture said: “We recognise the passing of this great Bermudian trailblazer who made an indelible mark on Bermuda’s culture and history.
“We take this opportunity to extend our sincerest and deepest condolences to Mr Ottiwell Simmons’s family, loved ones and friends.
“It is only right and fitting that the focus of Sunday be on the late Ottiwell Simmons, who was the iconic former president of the Bermuda Industrial Union and a member of the House of Assembly.”
The public will be notified of the new date for the Premier’s Concert.
