Cindy could recover as a storm towards weekend
A tropical storm that petered out earlier this week could strengthen as it makes its way to Bermuda, forecasters have warned.
Tropical Storm Cindy weakened on Sunday night while still hundreds of miles to the southeast of Bermuda.
But, according to the US National Hurricane Centre, conditions could breathe new life into the weather system
A post on the NHC website stated: “While strong upper-level winds are expected to prevent redevelopment of this system over the day or so, environmental conditions could become marginally conducive for some gradual development during the latter part of this week.
“The system is forecast to move generally northward over the western Atlantic, passing near Bermuda on Thursday.”
Forecasters on the wunderground weather website said that the “ghost” of Cindy was expected to move northward into a small pocket of lower wind shear.
The website added: “Combined with a still relatively warm ocean, that could allow for thunderstorms to become more clustered again and reform a tropical depression or tropical storm as it’s near Bermuda later this week.”
“Right now, computer forecast models aren't yet in sync on when it may arrive, but it’s mostly likely to be this weekend.”
If Cindy does become a depression or storm again, it would keep the same name.
Storms coming back to life occur every few years or so in the Atlantic.
The last time that happened was in September 2020, when Paulette regenerated into a tropical storm near the Azores after passing over Bermuda as a hurricane.
