The Ministry of Public Works is looking for a company to carry out additional temporary repairs on the ageing Swing Bridge in St George’s.

According to a request for quotation, published on the government procurement website this week, the project would involve the supply, fabrication and installation of new steel beams.

Included diagrams show the beams would be required on the St David’s side of the bridge, which links St David’s to St George’s.

The submission deadline for the project is 3pm on July 20.

The RFQ is the second to be issued in a matter of months, with the ministry in March seeking a firm to carry out urgent repairs to the bridge.

The ministry has also put out a request for proposal to review plans for proposed replacements for both the Swing Bridge and nearby Longbird Bridge.

Last year, it was announced that a condition assessment and load rating would be carried out on the Swing Bridge. That survey took place last month.

It had been predicted that both the Swing Bridge and Long Bird Bridge would reach the end of their useful lives in 2021.

Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the Minister of Public Works, said last year that $400,000 had been earmarked in this year’s Budget for repair work on the bridge.

However, he said plans to replace the bridge had been moved to the back burner because of the economic challenges faced by the Government.
