A sexual abuse prevention charity received a $1,100 donation this week.

Shervonne Cash-Hollis, the chair of the 50th Bahamian Independence Committee in Bermuda, donated the money to Saving Children and Revealing Secrets as Bahamians living in Bermuda celebrated the nation’s independence.

The committee hosted a series of events last weekend, including a celebration featuring the Gombeys and Bahamian Junkanoo dancers on Friday night; a gala at Rosewood Tucker’s Point on Saturday; and a service at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity on Sunday. Bahamian Independence Day is celebrated on Monday.

Frederick Mitchell, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Bahamas, took part in the festivities.

Ms Cash-Hollis called Scars the “perfect charity” to give the funds, which were mostly raised through raffle ticket sales.

Scars trains adults in how to reduce and prevent child sexual abuse before it occurs.

Debi-Ray Rivers, the founder and executive director of Scars, thanked the committee and the Bahamian Association in Bermuda for the donation. She said the charity, which has trained thousands of Bermudians and almost 100 Bahamians virtually, would use the funds to continue its work.

She added: “We have educated about a quarter of our adult population on prevention and our hope is that the Bahamas can replicate what Bermuda has done in terms of child protection.

“There are so many great charities in Bermuda and we are grateful they chose us for this donation.”
